Michael Pipkin
Now lets talk cool for a minute -- poetry cool (feel free
to drop some Miles Davis on the turntable -- that's right, I said turntable --
pour yself a snifter of Cognac Hennessy and snap your fingers as you read
on...)
It would be safe to say that Michael is a man who has taken the
road less travelled. Hes an artist -- be it poetry, long-form narrative,
standing in front of a crowd and delivering spoken word -- snap, snap --
its all good. He was raised in a house of art, his father is a sculptor.
He studied film in college and sticks to the works of directors like Francis
Ford Coppola when describing his favorites. Hes an admirer of how Coppola
could take a serious subject like the Viet Nam war in Apocalypse Now and
illustrate it with nightmarishly beautiful images to give those whove
never experienced the horror a unique window to look through
(snap-snap).
Though not a war-monger by nature, if he had his choice to pen a
favorite historical character for the screen it would be Hannibal Barca, the
Cartheginian Elephant Master. Youve got a love a man who would challenge
the Roman Empire.
Now take a sip and lets break it down:
For all his cool
Michael was nearly a fool
When he got
hit by a car
While riding his bike in the far
Off city by the bay
And what he learned that day
Was that life is precious.
And he should
never wait to say
Kind words to loved ones
And, oh, by the way...
Getting hit by a car stings
He wears a helmet when he
sings
The sweet sounds of pedal-stroke-pedal
While cycling
Today in
the city -- or for that matter --
Anywhere.
Cool, Michael. Reeeeeeeal cool, baby.
